The Epiphany - July 1, 2011

Raph stared quietly. He had never seen anything like this. It was nothing too incredible, but what made this so special was that he had an epiphany while watching the phenomenon.
He had set off that morning with the only intention of finding treasures on the beach. He had arrived at his grandmother’s home the night before. The anticipation of this little adventure had been building up since his mother had told him he would spend a week with his Mami. He did not visit her often.
Raph had just picked up a shiny piece of blue glass from the wet sand when he noticed the distant shape. He put his hand to his forehead to block the setting sun from his view and attempt to identify what it was he saw. The dark shape moved, carefully shifting into another position. If he were on a field, Raph would have thought it was an agitated scarecrow in the wind. If he were at the museum, the ten year old would have thought it was a sculpture. But there, on the warm beach, Raph did not know what he was staring at on the top of that rock.
The dark haired boy cautiously walked closer to the intriguing shape. When a series of high rocks was the only obstacle separating Raph from the occupied one, he realized he was staring right ahead at a human being. Why was it standing on one foot? That, Raph did not know.
But what he knew was that his grandmother was not alone. She had never been alone.
